Netscape
Composer is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What
You Get) editor that comes with Netscape Communicator. Earlier
version of Netscape Navigator do not come with a copy of composer. You will
need to ensure that you are running Netscape Communicator before proceeding.
The screenshot examples on this page are taken from Netscape Communicator 4.61 Getting
Started The
very first thing we want to do is save your first page, your title page, to
your computer. This process can be repeated later when/if you need to create
other pages for your personal web site. First you will need to create a folder
on your hard drive where all your files will be stored. It is highly
recommended that you keep all your files and graphics in one folder. - First
load Netscape Communicator on your computer.
- Next click on "File"
and then "New" then "Blank Page". This
will start Netscape Composer onto a blank page.
- To start setting up
your page click on "Format" and then click on "Page
Properties" this is also called "Page Color and
Properties" depending o which version of Netscape you are using.
On this screen here you can set the title of your page as well as the
background and link colors.
- Now we want to save your page onto your
computer. Click on "File" and then click on "Save".
You will now need to locate the folder you created or find a folder where
you want to keep your files.
- Your first page MUST be called
index.html in order for your site to come up correctly on the Internet.
Toolbar
Below are explanations of some of the buttons you will need to use
regularly when creating any page.

would look like if you were viewing it from the Internet. This is a
good way to check your formatting. |

pages on your site or other pages on the Internet. Remember to type in
the full address with http:// in front of the address. |

open up a window to browse for this graphic. You should have this
graphic in the EXACT same directory as your other web site files. |

must first highlight the text you want to be bold and then click on this
icon. |
Hints and Suggestions
Graphics: Remember when you are inserting graphics onto
your pages the graphics MUST be in the same directory as your other files. If
you link to a picture that is in another directory it will NOT show up when
you look at your page on the Internet.
Filenames: All your filenames should be done in
lower case and be one word.
