VANOC presents $750,000 sport legacy trust fund to Squamish

June 17/09 Last fall the community voiced its frustrations at a public meeting, claiming that promised Olympic benefits were not being delivered - including getting a new ferry terminal, a cruise ship to house media or Olympic workers, and making Squamish a transportation hub for spectators. At one point Squamish even offered to house the Paralympic hockey and curling events after the facility became too expensive to build in Whistler.

Gardner acknowleged that there was history between Squamish and VANOC, but he believes the money, given at a time of fiscal restraint by Olympic organizers, is a recognition of the town's growing importance to the success of the 2010 Games.

"I am very pleased that VANOC has acknowledged the role of the community of Squamish in the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games," he said.

Whistler’s biggest conference boosts business

Business was booming over the weekend as Whistler played host to its biggest conference to date.  There was an uncharacteristic early June hustle and bustle in the village streets as patios buzzed in the beaming sunshine and shop tills rang up sales.  By all accounts, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) annual conference from June 5 to 8 was a great success.  Borrowing the words from a colleague, Mayor Ken Melamed said: "I think we hit a home run. It may have been one of the most exciting four days in Whistler for me."  The mayor said he couldn't walk anywhere without being stopped and complimented on the well-run conference, the beautiful resort, and on his welcoming speech.  Whistler hosted more than 1,700 delegates over the course of four days. An additional 750 companions were also part of the program.  The municipality estimated a $6 million spin off in economic activity to the resort.

Mar. 22/09 Pierre Lueders and Kaillie Humphries Win Two-Man and Women's Canadian Championship Titles
WHISTLER, B.C. — Edmonton Eskimos running back Jesse Lumsden became a national two-man bobsleigh champion with pilot Pierre Lueders on Saturday at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Lueders, with Lumsden on the brakes, clocked a two-run combined time of one minute, 44.73 seconds to finish in first place.

The six-foot-two, 226-pound football star has been training this week with the Canadian bobsleigh team. His times have been on par with some of the team's veterans. Lumsden signed last month with the Eskimos after playing four CFL seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

"When I volunteered to give bobsleigh a try, I never figured I would end up at this point. I think any athlete would take full advantage of the opportunity to possibly represent his or her country at the Olympics," Lumsden said.

Mar. 3/09 Municipality rolls out Celebration Plaza details Still no money, timeline for an ice rink

Celebrate Good Times? Though controversial from day one, Celebration Plaza could well be a significant and enjoyable Olympic legacy, says one municipal official. With an amphitheater, park space, and a smattering of tress, residents may find themselves drawn to the area.

Even though Lot 1/9 is completely barren except for a few trees at the north end, Martin Pardoe, manager of parks and planning for the municipality, eventually sees Celebration Plaza transformed into a flexible, affordable community space.

The plaza will consist of a large, circular lawn, indented at one end by a 400-person amphitheatre, Pardoe explained to council Tuesday night.

" Legacy Plaza " - a space dedicated to remembering the 2010 Olympics - will go where the Olympic Information Booth currently sits, next to the Brewhouse.

The playground structure near Marketplace will be expanded and designed for kids of all abilities. And, two spots have been set-aside for stages. The whole site will be wired for performances.

"One of the drivers is affordable community use and flexibility," said Pardoe.

"The other objective is to reduce the cost and risk of someone hosting a performance, whether it is a community group or someone outside the community."

The total cost to revamp the plaza from the gravel-covered space VANOC will use during the Games to its post-Olympic state is $6.3 million, said Pardoe. That amount is included in the $13.6 million construction budget, of which $4.5 million is coming from the Resort Municipality of Whistler's hotel tax revenue.

Part of that money will go towards "beefing up the existing trees," said Pardoe, as well as building a roof for the amphitheater.

With these planned features, Pardoe said the plaza could be used for busking, private and corporate events, exhibitions, classical arts, festivals, and performances.

A 2,000-person rock concert could potentially also take place in the plaza, said Pardoe, but because of the noise he does not see this being a common use.

But a skating rink will probably not be built.

No money or timeline has been announced for the "third" construction phase of Celebration Plaza , which includes five buildings and an ice amenity.

"I personally don't remain convinced that moving forward with an ice structure, whether it is indoors or not, is a good investment of tax dollars," said Pardoe.

"The capital costs to develop a facility... are significant. There is also another issue of the look of the concrete slab in the summer months."

Whistler residents will get access to Celebration Plaza once construction wraps up in Oct. 2010.
