We started our llama family with three girls:
Beaujolais 98
from Mt. Lehman Llamas,
Keno
from Kokomo Llamas and,
Victorianna
from Cashman Creek Llamas.
We thought it was important to buy llamas from different breeders for several reasons:
First, each of our animals comes from different backgrounds, and
this makes future
breeding conflicts less likely. This is something to think about
when you are
starting off. Some farms we visited were unable to offer rebreedings
because
their animals were mostly from the same lineage.
Second, every llama farm we visited was extremely helpful
to us, but by purchasing
from more than one farm, we were able to see how the different farms operated
and we were also able to get support from more than one breeder.
Third, because we were new llama owners, we probably made
some purchasing
mistakes, but by buying from different farms, we hopefully limited our
mistakes.
We bought our girls in the spring of 2000, and had Keno & Victorianna
bred before
bringing them onto our farm. Beaujolais was about one and a
half years old when
purchased, and we felt she was a bit too young for breeding. Her
turn came in the
spring of 2001.
