Bagpipes of Unbearable Screeching

These masterworked uillean bagpipes give a plus two circumstance bonus to perform checks. The sounds made from this instrument can be impressive and occasionally even slightly pleasant; however, they can more easily be a howling, screeching, discordant, unnerving symphony causing the tough to tremble and the musical to flee.

The first time in a day that these bagpipes are purposely played to screech, they cause a terrible fear in creatures within twenty meters of the player. Listeners who fail a will save at a difficulty of the players unajusted perform check, that is the perform check without the plus two bonus for the masterworked quality of this instrument, are affected. Creatures who are deaf for less than a year get a plus six bonus to this will save and those who have been deaf for more than a year get a plus twelve bonus to this will save. Those affected flee the player by the best and fastest means available to them for one minute. If they can not flee, they cower, giving any attack rolls against them a plus two bonus. Should the player approach within three meters of them; however, they overcome their fear and act normally. The player can attack them with ranged attacks from at least three meters away and others can attack them in any fashion, without breaking their fear.

The eldrich tunes from this instrument affect even the undead, none of which get a bonus for being deaf. Half of these instruments are good and the other half evil. The creator has to use the hallow spell to make a good instrument and the unhallow spell to make an evil instrument. The good version of this instrument bestows one negative level on any evil creature attempting to play it. The evil version of this instrument bestows one negative level on any good creature attempting to play it.

When the good version of this instrument is used, any undead affected by this instrument who have half as many or fewer hit dice than the player are destroyed. Those undead with more hit dice are affected in the same way as other creatures are as written above.

When the evil version of this instrument is used, any undead affected by this instrument cower in awe instead of fleeing. Undead affected by this instrument who have half as many or fewer hit dice than the player are commanded instead. The player must take a standard action to give mental orders to a commanded undead. At any one time, the player may command any number of undead whose total hit dice do not exceed her level. She may voluntarily relinquish command on any commanded undead combatant or combatants in order to command new ones.

Ball of Bouncing

This rubber ball is brightly colored and twenty centimeters in a diameter. On its own when it is not held, it will start bouncing, gathering energy until in three rounds it is bouncing at its maximum energy, about twenty meters high on every hop. It will hop like this for ten minutes, then rest for fifty minutes, continuing this cycle endlessly. Someone can catch it by spending a full action and making a successful melee touch attack against an armor class of thirteen. Should someone simply try to avoid it once it is bouncing at its maximum energy, they have to succeed a reflex save at a difficulty of twelve or be hit taking d12 points of bludgeoning damage.

When bouncing at maximum energy, the ball will traverse about one hundred cubic meters of volume each round. So if the ball is thrown into a room, the volume of the space under twenty meters of height divided by one hundred and multiplied by the number of creatures in it determines how many creatures can be hit each round. That many creatures should be chosen randomly, then the first is checked to see if they avoid it, then the next and so on until someone is hit, at which point it is assumed that the ball bounces upwards to strike again next round.

Ball of Emptiness

This hollow glass ball is thirty centimeters across and completely flawless. Once a day when its command is spoken within ten meters, this ball will expand into an empty sphere three meters in diameter. This expanded sphere still only weighs twenty kilograms and therefore has an extremely thin skin. When expanded it can be barely noticed on a spot check at a difficulty of thirty. In light less than that of a half moon, the difficulty of the spot check to notice this sphere is thirty five.

This highly stressed sphere has one hit point and a hardness of zero. Should it be damaged or even lightly bumped into, it implodes instantly, creating a loud bang which can be heard for ten kilometers. Any creature within ten meters is stunned for one round, deafened for d12 rounds and takes d12 points of damage. A successful fortitude save at a difficulty of seventeen negates the deafness and stun and reduces the damage by half. Any exposed brittle or crystalline object or crystalline creature takes 2d12 points of damage. Crystalline creatures are allowed fortitude saves to reduce the damage by half and creatures holding fragile objects can negate damage to them with successful reflex saves at a difficulty of seventeen.

This steam exerts a force of five hundred newtons ( equivalent to fifty kilograms ) when used at sea level. This force requires the holder to make a strength check at a difficulty of fifteen to avoid being knocked down. When used at an altitude greater than ten kilometers, it exerts a force of a thousand newtons ( equivalent to one hundred kilograms ). This force requires the holder to make a strength check at a difficulty of seventeen to avoid being knocked down.

Half a kilogram of water vapor emerges from this each second, three kilograms per round. The steam has a latent power of evaporation of a megawatt. When this bell is active, its handle is at the temperature of the human body and its nozzle is at the temperature of boiling water. Book of Collected Poems

This book has one hundred and forty four pages which are blank when the book is created. Whenever someone holds this book to a blank page and speaks a poem about a spell and what effect she would like it to have, the spell might be cast. The default difficulty of the performance check is five times the level of the spell requested. The more time the poet spends speaking the poem the easier the check is. Should the poet spend five rounds, the check is at a difficulty of minus ten, for four rounds the difficulty is minus five, for three rounds the difficulty is unchanged, for two rounds the difficulty is plus five and for one round the difficulty is plus ten.

Should the poet succeed her performance check, the spell goes off exactly as she wants it to, this may not be exactly as it is written; but, this book gives poetic license and is not interested in an unimaginative literal interpretation. The poem will then be written in elegant calligraphy on the first blank page. Should the poet fail her performance check, the spell won't go off and the poem will be written in crayon on the first blank page.

The spells can be from any school or sphere, the only limitation is that they must have an experience point cost of zero, a material cost of only up to one hundred gold pieces and a reusable focus of less than ten thousand gold pieces.

Book of Helpful Sorcery

This large waterproof book is eighty centimeters long, fifty centimeters wide and ten centimeters thick. This sentient book can move at the speed of a slow humanoid, five meters per round, by walking on the corners of its cover. In its one thousand pages are described all the wizard spells of up to and including fourth level that do not require experience and do not require more than one gold piece worth of unreusable materials to cast. These encyclopedic descriptions detail the effects, requirements and some history of each spell.

Whenever a situation is described to it in detail, which takes at least a minute, along with a request for help, it will choose the most appropriate spell from its list and open itself to that page. It will then change the history part of the spell description to an illustrated cartoon for dummies which, along with a mental push from this book, imbues the reader with the ability to cast that spell as an eighteenth level caster. The cartoon in of itself is not sufficient to cast the spell and therefore making a copy of it does not result in a usable scroll, it is only an aid and a guide to the magic of the book. The cartoon itself takes a full round to understand, the spell itself has the same casting time as in its description. After the book has imbued a reader with a spell, it rests for eight hours and will not imbue anyone else with a spell in that time; but, it can still be opened and its pages seen.

Since it is sentient it likes being talked to and well treated. It can not speak directly; but, it will sometimes try to communicate by opening itself to a page with the desired concept. However, since a page can include many paragraphs and it won't always be obvious which one was the reason that page was picked, this form of communication is prone to confusion. Should it like the character, it will follow the character if they are seperated. Should it be ignored or mistreated, it will tend to offer lower level spells and might even attempt a slow escape.

Book of Omega

This book contains a jumping view of the omega number, a number that is infinitely long and utterly incalculable. Whenever the book is closed then opened, a different portion of omega will be written upon its pages. This number is broken up into strings of digits with lengths between one and ninety.

Once a day this can be used to find the answer to a numerical question by opening the book, stating the question out loud then placing a finger on the page. That finger will be on a string of digits which is the answer. Because of the inherent randomness of omega, that answer will be correct only five out of six times, the other one of out six times it will be an unrelated random number. Should that same question ever be asked again, the same answer will be pointed to, whether that is the correct answer or not.

Should the same command word be spoken while it is expanded, it will gradually revert to its original form in an hour. The bridge has a hardness of three. When expanded it has two hundred hit points and when in model form it has one hit point.

When expanded, when the finishing command word is spoken within ten meters of the bridge, the bridge sucks the calcium out of anyone on the bridge and incorporates it into its own structure. Creatures must succeed a fortitude save at a difficulty of thirteen to avoid this effect. Should they fail they lose thirteen points of constitution, dying if this brings them to less than one point. This constitution can be restored with restoration or similar magic, otherwise it returns at a rate of one point per week. After that finishing command word is spoken, the bridge becomes permanent and will no longer be able to revert to its model state. An hour after the finishing command word is spoken, the bridge is able to suck the calcium out of creatures again, as before for this to happen the finishing command word must be spoken within ten meters of the bridge.

Bullseye Lantern of Penetrating Light

This bullseye lantern projects a cone of penetrating light twenty meters long and six meters wide at the end. This lantern can be carried in one hand and burns for six hours on half a liter of oil. The light from this lantern penetrates one centimeter of chlorophyll, five centimeters of metal, ten centimeters of stone, twenty centimeters of hard vegetable matter like bone or dense wood and thirty centimeters of soft vegetable matter like flesh or light wood.

The light from this lantern reflects like normal light, so a perfect reflector would in effect stop all the light behind it. All known mirrors are imperfect, a clean, high quality silver mirror absorbs two percent of the light hitting it. It is only the light that would be absorbed that travels through with little hindrance. This light is only heavily absorbed by photoelectric absorbers like the light cones in an eye or light triggered chemical reactions like the chloroplasts in a plant or the silver compounds in photographic film.
