A rubber doormat like those used to clean shoes at the entrances to apartments can be placed on the ground and grass can grow through it. It is pretty durable, so it could probably take slow vehicle traffic, like in a driveway. The typical door mat is 0.6 m x 0.9 m and a typical driveway is 3 m x 6 m so thirty four door mats would be needed to cover a driveway. As long as the climate is not too wet, the mats would enable a driveway to be grass covered without ruts.

To make a road mat capable of carrying heavier traffic, wider treads can be used in the road mats, probably up to about 0.13 m wide, the width of the treads available from typical cars from which rubber mats are usually made. The ideal road mat should be available in large widths and should be able to interlock with other road mats to form a continuous road mat that will keep together even in storms. Also, the insides should be reflective so that grass or other plants could grow through it easier.
