CO-OPS have adopted the rainblow flag as a symbol of the unity within diversity, the oneness that unites the many.

SINCE 1984 I have lived in co-operative housing environments, first in upscale False Creek and now in the East end of Vancouver, B.C. I have been Secretary of the Board, Chair of Membership Committee, a member of Maintenance Committee, and general gofer (not to mention a poet, a pauper and a pawn in the game). In return, I have received security of tenure (knowing that no landlady or landlord will throw me out for no good reason), have paid rents based strictly on operating expenses (no one raising my rent arbitrarily) and have met some really fine people (as well as some really brain-dead dolts with an IQ no greater than room temperature, but hey! that's life).

WHAT is co-operative housing? Money and Time are invested in your co-op: money in the form of a Shares Purchase (interest from which goes towards the operating expenses), and time in the several monthly hours donated to committee work (the various tasks of a co-op are allocated to equally various committees). Accomplishments include the seasonal potlucks and parties!

ABOUT OUR RECENT NAME CHANGE

The following motion was considered at an Extraordinary General Meeting:

Motion to change the name of Cityview Housing Co-operative to "Aaron Webster Housing Co-operative"

History: Aaron Webster was a member of Cityview. He was murdered in Stanley Park in November of 2001. It is generally believed that his murder was a hate crime, committed because he was a gay man. His murderers have been convicted, although they have received light sentences. The Board has been in contact with Aaron's mother, who is very excited about the possibility of our name change, and said also that Aaron would have liked the idea too. This motion would enable our community to memorialize Aaron in a positive way that would last into the future. CHF/BC has been in contact with the Board and their Diversity Committee wishes to be involved with the project as well. CHF/BC has absorbed lawyer's fees and advised us of the steps to be taken.

This is in response to a motion approved at the last General Meeting in support of the Board looking into the steps to change our Co-op's name.

THIS MOTION WAS PASSED IN THE SPRING OF 2005. THEREFORE, THE FORMER CITYVIEW HOUSING CO-OPERATIVE IS NOW KNOWN AS AARON WEBSTER HOUSING CO-OPERATIVE.
